It is to create a route that feels manageable on an ordinary day, not only when everyone is feeling strong and steady.

Match the ramp to the person and equipment

Ramp capacity should account for the combined weight of the mobility device, the person using it, and any items carried along. Never assume a ramp intended for a light manual chair will safely accommodate a power wheelchair or scooter.

Do not use furniture, blocks, bricks, or makeshift boards to extend a ramp or change its angle. Those arrangements can shift unexpectedly. Likewise, never exceed the stated weight limit or use a ramp for a mobility device it was not designed to support.

Consider the full route, not just the step

The path beyond the ramp deserves the same attention. A wheelchair user needs room to approach the ramp straight on, turn safely at the top, and open the door without rolling backward. At an exterior entrance, look for drainage, porch space, lighting, and handholds. At a vehicle, confirm that the parking surface is level and that there is adequate room for loading without traffic passing too closely.
